Improving School Attendance for Children and Young People Experiencing Emotional Based School Avoidance

After receiving the initial referral, the school engagement co-ordinator will assess the contributing risk factors that have become a barrier to the child and young person accessing education

The school engagement co-ordinator will agree a date of review, and share the plan with all parties involved and continually monitor the progress the child or young person is making ensuring the steps for reintegration are appropriate, if they are not, adjusting to meet the needs of the child or young person.

Despite the best efforts of parents and schools sometimes the need of children and young people can go unmet, resulting in children and young people not attending school for long periods of time. This not only hinders academic progress but also their social development and emotional well-being. We promote positive and supportive communication between home and school, ensuring everyone feels listened too, connected and involved with supporting the child or young person to positively move forward and improve their engagement in education.

An individual tailored support package to help children and young people improve their school attendance. The support provided will be targeted at the child or young person specific needs and nurture their protective factors.

What is provided

Duration of the programme

Weekly 1- hour sessions for approximately 12 weeks during the term time. However, if a child or young person needs extended support with their integration back into school, the support time can increase for up to 4 weeks, to provide optimum opportunity for success and to help the child or young person to develop a positive relationship with a member of the school staff.

We are aware that children and young people move forward at different paces and when a child or young person feels pressured to time constraints it can exacerbate their EBSA symptoms. However, if it becomes apparent that the child or young person is not engaging or positively moving forward within 8 weeks it will be reviewed to whether this is the correct support service that best meets the needs of the child or young person. This decision will involve the child or young person, parents, school - all working collaboratively to find the correct support to enable the child or young person to positively move forward and engage in education.

Any child or young person who lives and attends a school in Tonbridge, Kent and is between the ages of 8-16 years old with school attendance between 65% and 93%.

The school, parent and child or young person must all consent and wants to work collaboratively - this is to ensure the optimum chance of success for the child or young person.

Who can access the programme

As an inclusive charity we do not discriminate, there is not a selection process. Referrals will be allocated in chronological order on receipt of the referral form.

NB:

However, we would like to highlight that if we deem our services are not suitable for a child or young person, thereby putting a child or young person (or family) at further risk and exacerbating the difficulties they are experiencing, we will offer support (where appropriate) and signpost to a more suitable professional organisation who would be more able to provide the correct support.
